Abstract

Purpose: to develop a substantive theory that represents wives¢¥ experience of family members with absolute bed rest in the hospital. Methods: Grounded theory method guided the data collection and analysis. Data was collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews of 6 females, twice sequentially between May 25, 2003 and July 10, 2003. All interviews were in audio-taped and were transcribed verbatim. Constant comparative analysis was done. In the process of data analysis, 158 concepts, 28 subcategories, 9 categories were identified. Findings: "Fatigue" was the central phenomena. "To perservere in spite of suffering" is core category, integrating the nine subcategories: ¢¥absolute bed rest admission; ¢¥patient¢¥s condition¢¥; ¢¥vulnerable to the effect of medical personnel¢¥s attitude; ¢¥supportive system; ¢¥active coping; ¢¥passive .coping¢¥ ¢¥retrieval a high-minded couple relationship; and ¢¥stagnated couple relationship¢¥. Conclusion: The results of this study would help nurses to develop nursing intervention to help family caregivers with absolute bed rest patient in the hospital or family setting. Further research is needed to verify the findings.
